Cheese during Pregnancy

It’s been realized that large amount of confusion occurs regarding eating cheese during pregnancy. It is not that the woman cannot eat cheese at all during pregnancy. Similarly, it’s not advised that a pregnant woman can eat all types of cheeses obtainable in market.

There are specific types of cheese which have been categorized as unsafe for a pregnant woman and thus, ought not to be eaten. These cheeses result in growth of bacteria like listeria in the body of mother and causes injury to the growing baby. Thus, an expectant woman must eat those cheeses that are considered as safe during pregnancy. Any carelessness in connection with this can prove very harmful.

A number of cheeses that are considered as safe for a pregnant woman include hard cheeses like smoked cheese, derby, edam, parmesan, havarti, cheddar, feta cheese, gruyere, etc. Apart from above, soft processes cheeses like cottage cheese, processed cheese spread and segments, cream cheese, mozzarella, garlic and herb roulade will also be considered as safe for any pregnant woman. Goat’s cheese without white rind is also categorized as safe for any pregnant woman. Similarly, soured cream and yoghurts are also considered as safe during pregnancy.

As far as unsafe cheeses are worried, during pregnancy, a female must not eat soft and mould ripened cheeses. These include camembert, brie and chevre. Similarly, blue veined cheeses like stilton and Danish blue must not be eaten during the pregnancy. If previously discussed cheeses are pasteurized, they’re still considered as unsafe for any pregnant woman, as they are less acidic and contain more moisture. Such cheeses provide perfect environment for that growth of bacteria. In many cases, due to consumption of unsafe cheeses during pregnancy, a lot of women had miscarriages. One aspect that should be understood is the fact that the signs of various disorders occur weeks after use of unsafe cheese and therefore, it is usually late to act.

A pregnant woman mustn’t get feared and stop eating cheese. Cheese is a great source of calcium, which is greatly required during the pregnancy. While eating safe cheeses, a woman need to ensure that they have been properly cooked. This helps to ensure that no live bacteria are there in cheese. Cheese should be cooked until it becomes piping hot.
